ΘΑ ΝΙΚΗΣΟΥΜΕ

Εκείνα τα σάπια σπίτια
που ξέμειναν στο πλάι της θάλασσας
Εκείνα τα παιδιά που τρέχουνε στον δρόμο
να προλάβουν μες το παγωμένο ξημέρωμα την προσευχή στο σχολείο
Εκείνα τα ερείπια των Ρωμαίων αυτοκρατόρων και
των Βυζαντινών νησιά πεταμένα μέσα στο πέλαγος σαν από λάθος
Οι γλάροι που σκίζουν τον ουρανό το απόγευμα
Οι ψυχές μας που ταξιδεύουν από λιμάνι σε λιμάνι
μαθαίνουν σκληρές, στεγνές λέξεις
πατάνε τον τρόμο της γης
γεύονται το νερό,
χαϊδεύουν τα υγρά σώματα
ζουν και πεθαίνουν.

Θαμμένοι κάτω από τα ερείπια
με το κεφάλι στραμμένο στο φως του Ήλιου μέσα από τις χαραμάδες,
αγάλματα παγωμένα στον χρόνο
με το χαμόγελο της αμήχανης καλοσύνης
να κοιτάμε το πέλαγος και τις ματωμένες πέτρες
και τον σκληρό δυνατό άνεμο
που μας τρυπάει το πρόσωπο
και μας κλείνει τα μάτια
να μην κοιτάμε τον εχθρό
που παραμονεύει
να κλέψει τα τραγούδια μας
και τα παιδιά μας.

Όλα όσα ζούμε είναι μια πληγή
μια μυστική κρύπτη
ένα πέρασμα κρυφό
για να πολεμάμε την μοίρα μας
να ξυπνήσουμε
σε ένα τόπο που θα χαράξουμε πάνω στις πέτρες το όνομα μας.

Η μοναξιά του Αυτοκράτορα και των ζητιάνων,
ο φόβος του νεαρού εραστή
και του στρατάρχη,
ο ψαλμός του επιτάφιου και των ερωτευμένων
ο τάφος του φτωχού και του αγίου,
τα παράθυρα ανοιχτά στον ουρανό και την φροντίδα,
ο δρόμος που τυλίγει τα χωράφια,
ο Ήλιος που κάνει τα σπαρτά να λυγίζουν και να τραγουδούν,
τα φαντάσματα των νεκρών φίλων μας
και οι σκοτωμένοι αντάρτες,
η τελευταία ριπή του πολυβόλου
και έπειτα η ησυχία
ένας πνιχτός κλαυθμός και τα χέρια σου
που κλείνουν την πληγή μου
να μην φανεί το τριαντάφυλλο
που ανθίζει στον κόρφο μου
καθώς πεθαίνω στα χέρια σου
καθώς πεθαίνεις στα χέρια μου.

Θα νικήσουμε αγάπη μου, στο υπόσχομαι,
θα νικήσουμε αγαπημένη μου,
μην φοβάσαι, θα νικήσουμε!

WE SHALL WIN

Those rotten houses
that stood by the side of the sea
Those kids running on the road
to avoid prayer at school in the frosty dawn
Those ruins of the Roman emperors
and
of the Byzantine islands
thrown into the sea
as if by mistake

The seagulls who tear the sky in the afternoon.
Our souls
traveling from port to port
they learn tough, dry words
they keep the terror of the earth
they drink the water,
they caress the wet bodies
they live and they die.

Buried under the ruins
with the head turned towards the light of the Sun through the cracks,
statues frozen in time
with the smile of the awkward kindness
to look at the sea and the bloody stones
and the harsh wind that pierces our face
and closes our eyes
not to look at the enemy
that lurks to steal our songs,
our songs and our children.

Everything we experience is a wound
a secret crypt
one hidden passage
to fight our fate
to wake up in a place where we shall be able to engrave our names on the stones.

The loneliness of the Emperor and of the beggars,
the fear of the young lover and of the Marshal,
the chant of the epitaph and of the lovers
the grave of the poor and of the saint,
the windows open to the sky and care,
the road that surrounds the fields,
the Sun that makes the crops bend and sing,
the ghosts of our dead friends
and the murdered rebels,
the last shot of the machine gun
and then quiet
a choked clatter
and your hands
that close my wound
to hide the rose that blossoms in my bosom
as I die
in your hands
as you die in my hands.

We shall win my love, I promise,
we shall win my beloved,
don't be afraid, we shall win!

We shall win!
